How to Fairly Divide Household Chores as a Couple
The reality: a persistent imbalance
Studies consistently show that women still spend significantly more time on domestic tasks than men. This imbalance generates frustration, conflicts, and exhaustion.
The Fair Play method
Inspired by Eve Rodsky's book, this approach consists of: 1. Listing all tasks (even invisible ones: scheduling appointments, thinking about gifts…) 2. Distributing them fairly considering each person's preferences and constraints 3. Giving complete responsibility: conception + planning + execution
The mental load score
Mental Loadless includes a scoring system based on 29 reference tasks. Each week, the app calculates the actual distribution and visualizes imbalances. It's not accusatory — it's a discussion tool.
Practical tips
- Do the exercise together: list everything that needs to be done for the family — you'll be surprised by the volume
- Rotate unpleasant tasks: take turns with tasks nobody enjoys
- Acknowledge effort: saying thank you, even for "normal" things, changes the atmosphere
- Accept imperfection: if your partner does laundry differently, that's OK
Involving children
Children can contribute too! Tidying their room, setting the table, helping with shopping… Mental Loadless offers a child mode with rewards (stars, badges) to motivate them.
